Rating Methodology

Overview

Every product receives two ratings: NPM Nutri Rating (nutrition quality) and Carbon Score (environmental impact). Both ratings use an A-E scale where A is best.

NPM Nutri Rating

The NPM Nutri Rating is based on the UK's Nutrient Profile Model (NPM). It assigns a score by balancing less healthy nutrients against healthier ones, then converts the result to an A-E grade.

How It Works

The NPM calculates a score based on:

Less healthy nutrients (increase score):

  • Energy, sugar, saturated fat, sodium

Healthier nutrients (decrease score):

  • Fibre, protein, fruit/veg/nuts content

Grade Thresholds

GradeFood ScoreDrink ScoreDescription
A≤ - 6≤ - 3Highest nutritional quality
B- 5 to - 1- 2 to - 1Good nutritional quality
C0 to 30Average nutritional quality
D4 to 151 to 14Lower nutritional quality
E≥ 16≥ 15Lowest nutritional quality

Carbon Score

The Carbon Score rates food according to its carbon intensity - carbon emissions per kilogram of food produced. These ratings are aligned with the global food carbon budget of 5 gigatonnes CO₂e per year set by the EAT-Lancet Commission to limit global warming to less than 2°C.

Grade Thresholds

GradeEmissions (kg COâ‚‚e/kg)Description
A< 1.81Very low impact
B1.81 - 2.90Low impact
C2.90 - 4.63Medium impact
D4.63 - 7.50High impact
E> 7.50Very high impact

A-rated products sit within the planetary boundary for greenhouse gas emissions from food production.

Product Matching

Products are scored using the Reewild Matching System. When you scan a receipt, AI finds the closest product match in our database and assigns carbon and nutrition ratings.

Match accuracy is displayed on each receipt to indicate confidence level.

How Ratings Affect Points

Both ratings are multiplied together in the points formula:

Points = Price × [(CarbonScore × NutriScore) ÷ 0.75] × R

This means:

  • A/A products earn maximum points
  • Mixed ratings (e.g., A/C) earn moderate points
  • E in either rating = zero points

See Points Calculation for full details.
